Open lecture: Ane Hjort Guttu – The True Art Academy

What is special about the contemporary art school´s most beloved pedagogical format: the studio visit? What happens in this encounter between the teacher and the student, why should we stick to it, and why is it under threat by the last 20 years´changes in Nordic art education?

Ane Hjort Guttu is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Oslo. Working across a range of media with a particular focus on text and moving images, she is engaged in the relationship between freedom and power, individual autonomy and agency, ways to navigate public space, and the social, economic, and political conditions of art and artistic practice.

She has a particular interest in art education and alternative pedagogical practices, and has developed several projects centered on learning and power within and beyond the educational institution.

Ane Hjort Guttu has exhibited extensively internationally, and has published several books, the most recent of which is forthcoming in 2026. Ane Hjort Guttu has been a professor at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts since 2016.

This is the third lecture in a lecture series held each semester at the Department of Fine Arts at IUA. In seven lectures during the semester, experts in the field of visual art discuss their own research, experiments, and artistic practice.

The lecture will take place in the lecture hall at IUA Laugarnes, Laugarnesvegur 91, 105 Reykjavík and is open across departments and to the public.
