Born out of the disastrous decline of their society, GANS’ sound is both a subversive social commentary and a physically exhilarating soundtrack for ecstatic dancing. The Birmingham duo shreds noisy hooks across the strings with an energy that is impossible to resist. Crunching percussion and basslines, alongside proper distortion, collide here with deadpan vocals and an uncompromising identity as an art project without compromise. In short: GANS are and embody what many bands would love to be and do. But Euan Woodman and Thomas Rhodes have no time for the subjunctive. “Good For The Soul” (2025) is the aptly named title of the duo’s debut album, released last year, on which they fuse the latest dance-punk revival with noise rock and industrial swagger. Tracks like “Nightwalking” or “It’s Just Life” sound like a defiant rejection of the status quo against a musical landscape that, even in the alternative scene, is increasingly dominated by polished, lab-created acts. But no chance of that. Both on record and on stage, GANS are all about honesty, confrontation and the unforgettable energy of cathartic live shows. Not to be missed.
